Recently, I had the pleasure of travelling to the beautiful city of Porto — a place that effortlessly blends history, culture, and craftsmanship. Perched along the Douro River, with its terracotta rooftops and winding cobbled streets, Porto is a city that feels both vibrant and timeless. But beyond its obvious charm lies something truly special: the world of Port wine.
No visit to Porto would be complete without crossing the river to Vila Nova de Gaia, home to the historic Port lodges. It was here that I had the privilege of visiting the iconic Sandeman cellar for a private tasting focused entirely on Tawny Ports, a rare and memorable experience.
Sandeman, founded in 1790, is instantly recognisable thanks to its mysterious “Don” figure with his cape and wide-brimmed hat, symbolising both heritage and intrigue. Stepping inside the lodge feels like stepping back in time. Cool stone cellars, rows upon rows of ageing casks, and the gentle, sweet aroma of maturing wine create an atmosphere that is both humbling and captivating.
Our private tasting was dedicated to Tawny Ports with age statements: 10, 20, 30 and 40 Year Old Tawny. For those who may be less familiar, Tawny Port is aged in smaller oak casks, allowing gradual oxidation over time. This process transforms the wine, softening its fruit character and developing layers of complexity, think toasted nuts, caramel, dried fruits, spice and delicate wood notes.
We began with the 10 Year Old Tawny. Fresh yet refined, it offered vibrant flavours of dried apricot, honey, toasted almonds and a hint of vanilla. There was still a youthful energy to it, balanced beautifully by gentle oak influence. It’s an incredibly versatile style, perfect with crème brûlée, nut-based desserts, or even simply enjoyed slightly chilled at the end of a meal.
Next came the 20 Year Old Tawny, and here the depth increased noticeably. Richer and silkier, it delivered notes of toffee, roasted hazelnuts, orange peel and warming spice. The texture was more luscious, the finish longer and more contemplative. This is the point where Tawny Port truly begins to show its elegance, a wine to sip slowly and savour.
The 30 Year Old Tawny was where things became truly special. At this age, the balance between freshness and maturity is remarkable. Layers of fig, walnut, caramelised sugar and subtle coffee notes unfolded in the glass. The colour had deepened to a glowing amber, and the finish seemed almost endless. It’s a wine that commands attention, complex, harmonious and beautifully poised.
Finally, we tasted the 40 Year Old Tawny, a rare privilege. This was extraordinary. Silky, refined and intensely aromatic, it offered waves of toasted pecans, dark toffee, dried citrus peel, exotic spice and a delicate hint of rancio character that only comes from decades in wood. The freshness was still present, despite its age, which is a testament to careful blending and meticulous cellar management. The finish lingered gracefully, long after the final sip.
What struck me most during this tasting was the artistry behind these wines. An age statement Tawny is not from a single vintage, it is a carefully crafted blend of many wines aged for varying periods, designed to express the house style at that average age. It takes immense skill and experience to achieve such consistency and balance.
Beyond the tasting itself, the visit was a reminder of how much tradition and patience go into every bottle. Port is not rushed. It is nurtured, watched over and blended with expertise developed over generations.
Porto as a city mirrors this philosophy. It is proud of its history yet full of life. From riverside cafés to dramatic viewpoints and historic wine lodges, it offers a sense of authenticity that’s increasingly rare.
This trip has deepened my appreciation for Tawny Port, particularly the elegance and complexity that comes with extended ageing. Whether you’re already a Port enthusiast or curious to explore, I would highly recommend discovering the beauty of aged Tawny styles.
If you’d like to learn more about these wines, or perhaps taste through the different age expressions yourself, I would be delighted to guide you.
Here’s to craftsmanship, patience, and the unforgettable charm of Porto.
